From the quiet reflection will come even more effective action." - James Levin

James Levin is actually an American conductor and pianist. It's amazing how people of such different backgrounds share the same philosophies. Reflection. This is what I've been doing for the past - well, for the past.

I finish my course (Visual Communications) in SEVEN weeks! Can you believe it! WEEKS! Not months (ok well a month and 3 weeks), not YEARS, but just a mere 7 weeks. It's quite daunting. I said to my housemate about 10 minutes ago that finishing college is actually more terrifying than it was starting ellybean designs. She looked at me, said "what? but then you can start focusing on ebd more!" and I was like "well yes, but.. what if I fail?"

Failure is the most fearful of feelings. Along with love, maybe. I find it difficult to back down from something I'm passionate about. I'm also one of those people who give everything 110%, I always said "I don't do things in halves" and my self perception may be different to the general projection, but I feel it's more than accurate when I really sit here and think about it.

So, college work. We've been given (and have since completed) two packaging projects. I have since discovered the beauty of packaging, I think it might be my favourite medium. There's something so liberating and unique about printing your work out and actually making it into something. It feels 300 times better than just looking at the work I've done on screen. I can touch it, I can feel it, it became real. The first project was a 6 panel cd cover - we were given a band and the copy, and told to make the dieline (the template used to cut/fold etc) as well as the graphics. We also had to base it on one of two art movements, pop art of psychedelia. I love pop art a thousand times than I love psychedelic art, yet somehow my cd cover turned out a lot more psychedelic than pop art! (How the hell did that happen?)

Here it is.

Again, in my defence, it was taken with a camera phone.

The next project we did was a pasta box for the brand Passion Pasta. I LOVED this project. Actually, as previously stated, I just love packaging, but I feel like I really "got" this brief. I feel like I was "on the money" (as my lecturer says) all the way. Slightly off when it came to the support graphic, but nothing a little altering could fix. So again, we had to come up with the dieline, the logo and the support graphics. More pics?

As for my actual freelancing, I've done a few projects here and there, my most recent being a logotype for "Start Small - Achieve Big" - a website based around personal goal setting. The guy who asked me to do the logo is just incredible, very inspiring, he always has so many projects going on in his life, yet still finds time for people, still finds the kindness in his heart to treat every person he comes across with the utmost respect. Anyway, so my thought process went a bit like this: well, start small could be in lower case, further emphasising the "small", the achieve big could be in uppercase. Further to that, I could put the lower case in a serif font - referncing the older type face, and the upper case in a very modern font, giving greater definition to the transition from small to big.

I then had problems with the fact that "start small" would not have the same consistant cap height as upper case would (the t's, the l's) - so I thought of a mixed case font, similar to the font used for the brand Element Eden (www.elementeden.com) and it worked a treat! Over all I think it's quite expressive of the meaning behind the name.

And here it is as well :)

And you know what, that's about it for me. I've actually already written this entry TWICE except my website decided to crash the first time (and stupid me didn't save it - have I not learned that yet?!?!) and the second time, I DID save it, but when I published it, it didn't publish it AND it got rid of the draft. But never the less, I feel this is a better piece than I was trying to write at 1:30 in the morning. Oh and before I forget.. if you love packaging even a SLIGHT bit, you'll love this website.

As usual, I'm leaving you with inspiring work others have done, because hell, I'm my own worst critic and everyone elses number 1 fan.

http://www.thedieline.com

Looking at the logo again..

http://www.ellybeandesigns.com/1/post/2009/12/looking-at-the-logo-again.html

http://www.ellybeandesigns.com/1/post/2009/12/looking-at-the-logo-again.html#comments

Uncategorized

The client thought maybe a MOUNTAIN would look better. Which kind of saddens me, but at least I know that my time is being spent on things that will help me be a BETTER freelancer, or graphic designer should I choose to be one at a later stage ;)

So I thought I'd post some of my college work, because although it's not FREELANCE work, it is indeed relevant to my business and becoming the best artist I can be.

The first of my work is a theatre poster design I did. This was a collaborative project with the students in the photography class. Their part was to take a picture using their photoshop/photography skills of the mask we both created to represent a modern take on "Frankenstein". My partner Rachel and I, opted to base our modern day Frankenstein on high school shootings, and consequently the perpetrator committing suicide. The connection back to frankenstein was the loneliness, the brutality of human kind towards them and the outcast treatment they were subject to. As the graphic design student, I had to create the "Frankenstein" logotype, as well as the (fake) Twelfth Night Theatre logotype, and then work on poster design layout.

We were pretty happy with the end result.

The second submission item we had to do recently was a t-shirt design based on cuban design theory - using block colours, no tones or tints, and very rounded "rough" edges. Most cuban art is done via screen print which doesn't allow for intricate detail or small shapes. The topic we had to create the shirt around was Climate Change. I've always liked t-shirts that poke fun at political issues in a controversial manner, so I decided to create a shirt that read "SAY YES TO ICE" and base it off global warming and the melting of polar ice caps

My shirt is below :)

The THIRD submission, I finished today. It's a type specimen based on Gill Sans, a font created by Eric Gill. Our number 1 objective was to find something interesting about either the font or the creator of the font and create a picture USING the font, based off our idea.

Sounds confusing. But I'll break it down. Eric Gill was very catholic, but was also very sexually driven. These two are quite polar opposites, especially when we find out Eric Gill was not only incestuous but also had intercourse with his dog..... yes, I'm serious. Quite the mad man, but still quite successful. I was originally thinking of doing my picture of a dog (comedic value) but I thought it would be more interesting to show the contrast of the catholic/sexual promiscuity sides. So I decided to create a picture of some rosary beads, but instead of using jesus as the figure on the cross, a woman. And again, we were only allowed to use type. No shapes, no adjusting of any of the letter forms. For an example, I used a capital D in Gill Sans font for the majority of the woman's body. Her hair is made of S's. And this is how it turned out:

College! I started my Visual Communications course at Design College Australia this week. It's amazing how inspiring it is to be in an environment that people WANT to be in - and not only that, they're all so passionate about it, and have great ideas, it makes it so much more challenging to work with.

I also went to CLOUDLAND which is absolutely the most visually stimulating architecture I have ever seen in my life. It's amazing. If you find youself there, take in the sites before getting stuck into the alcohol.. because bottom line is, it's just a club. But the interior design makes it worth the sobre sightings.

I finished up my website project with Victoria from Second Gear - another wonderful client (I can only hope that all my clients are this great to work with) - she partners a recycled designer label clothing store in Paddington, Brisbane. It's a beautiful store. Very classic, dusty pink paint covering the walls, victorian style furnishings and decore. It's got a great feel to it, and is in a great location too.

My project started when she asked me how she goes about getting her own website up and running. Not really knowing anything about HOW to do it, I grabbed my laptop and my knoweledge and made my way to Paddington where I could see for myself the type of store I was going to be emulating in my design. Victoria and I sat and discussed the purpose of the site, what she wanted featured on the site, if she had any images she'd like - lucky I bought my trusty camera and ended up using some shots I took of the store as a feature image! I then went away and created http://www.secondgear.weebly.com

After a few adjustments to the content, Victoria is now a very happy customer (or so she tells me!) It sort of saddens me when I finish work, I like the client relationships almost as much as I like creating, but nothing beats client gratitude with the end result.

Newest Addition.

http://www.ellybeandesigns.com/1/post/2009/06/newest-addition.html

http://www.ellybeandesigns.com/1/post/2009/06/newest-addition.html#comments

Uncategorized

I think doing business cards is one of my favourite design mediums.
